New research progress on high-hardness carbon-based coatings for mechanical seals of the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Industry

February 10, 2023

With the support of the 863 project of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the team led by Academician Xue Qunji and Researcher Wang Liping from the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication of the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences has obtained new research on high-hardness carbon-based coatings for mechanical seals. progress.

Harsh environments and variable operating conditions (frequent start-stop, low-speed / high-speed, boundary lubrication / near-dry friction, etc.) are the key factors that promote the reduction of the bearing capacity of the friction pair of the mechanical seal system, severe wear and poor reliability, and are also the keys to modern mechanical seals One of the main challenges facing parts. Carbon-based coatings represented by diamond-like and graphite-like coatings have received widespread attention in recent years. After years of accumulation, researchers have broken through the key manufacturing technologies of high-hardness, low-friction diamond-like and graphite-like coatings on the surfaces of key components of mechanical seals. The tribological dependence relationship between the high-hardness carbon-based coating and various soft rubbers and polymers is revealed and the new type of coating has excellent resistance to frequent start-stop damage. Related results were published in the recently published Tribology Letters (2012, 47, 67). .

Previously, in order to improve the tribological properties of diamond-like coatings under various gas and fluid environments, researchers at the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Research used surface micro-texturing technology and interfacial multi-layer gradient technology to synergize the excellent characteristics of carbon-based coatings. And the texturing effect significantly improves the component's service behavior and establishes a physical description of its tribological behavior with different friction partners. Related results were published in Journal of Applied Physics (2011,109: 013501), Journal of Applied Physics (2011,110: 033521), Tribology Letters (2011,44: 315) and Wear (2012,274-275: 43) and other journals on.
