New research and development: new medical glue seals wounds within 60 seconds

The new surgical glue, called MeTro, quickly combines into a gel when it comes into contact with the surface of the body, thus blocking the wound. Moreover, the researchers mixed the gel with a light-sensitive molecule, allowing it to coagulate faster under ultraviolet light. Hemostasis can be completed in 60 seconds, tightly bonding to the surrounding tissue without cracking. In addition, this glue can also be combined with a degrading enzyme to manipulate the time the glue stays on the wound, depending on the healing effect, and determine how long the gel stays.

Researchers say it can replace the needles and sutures currently used in surgery, but the range of applications is not only on the operating table. Because it works quickly, it can be used in emergency medical situations, such as car accident scenes or theaters, to quickly bond potentially fatal injuries to reduce infection and blood loss.

In addition, this glue can not only treat trauma, but also treat internal injuries. Nasim Annabi, an assistant professor at Northeastern University, also applied MeTro to the repair of visceral damage. He said: "Because the gel remains elastic and soft after coagulation, we think it can also use the lungs or the heart . On the breakage, we tried to use this sealant on the visceral wounds, and we have achieved initial success."

The team initially used rodents as an experiment. When the lungs were damaged, the mice were filled with MeTro, and the lungs did not shrink. Then they experimented with pigs and they also succeeded. The team is now going to be applied clinically and is now being used for human experiments.
